Trip Highlights

What is Day of the Dead?

Día de Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is one of Mexico’s most beautiful and meaningful celebrations. It is a joyful time when families honour and remember loved ones who have passed away. Streets and cemeteries fill with candles, marigolds, music, and colour, transforming entire cities into vibrant works of art. Altars, or ofrendas, are adorned with photos, flowers, and favourite foods to welcome returning spirits, blending ancient Aztec beliefs with Catholic tradition. Visiting Mexico during this season means witnessing a living tradition that celebrates life through remembrance, community, and joy, where you can really feel and experience the depth of this incredible culture.

Day 1 - Arrival in Mexico City

Arrive in the heart of Mexico City, where murals, street music, and the smell of street food set the tone for your adventure. Check into your accommodation and meet your Tour Leader, Local Guide and new travel crew over a lively welcome dinner.

Discover Frida Kahlo’s colourful Casa Azul and the artistic soul of Coyoacán. In the afternoon, float through Xochimilco’s canals on a traditional trajinera, complete with music, snacks, and bright blooms all around.

Join thousands in Mexico City’s iconic Day of the Dead Parade – a whirlwind of colour, music, and celebration. Towering Catrinas, marigolds, and brass bands fill the streets in one of the world’s most unique festivals.

Journey south to Oaxaca through rolling valleys and mountain scenery. Arrive in time to explore its cobblestone streets and plazas bursting with art, music, and festive energy.

Experience Día de Muertos at its most authentic – from candlelit cemeteries and intricate altars to lively street comparsas. It’s a night where music, memory, and tradition come alive in every corner.

Explore Oaxaca’s colourful markets before heading into the Sierra Norte mountains. Visit small villages, enjoy mountain views, and learn about local crafts and community life.

Explore the ancient Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán and discover Oaxacan folk art at a local alebrijes workshop. End the day with a mezcal tasting at a traditional family-run distillery.

Travel along the new mountain highway to reach the Pacific coast in just a few hours. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach or watching surfers ride the waves.

Today is the PERFECT day to relax, sunbathe and rest. Of course, there is some optional beach activities – you can go dolphin spotting, surfing or even opt for a bioluminescent swim in Laguna Manialtepec.

Soak up a final morning by the sea before boarding your overnight bus to Chiapas. Drift off as you travel through the mountains towards your next adventure.

Cruise through the dramatic Sumidero Canyon surrounded by towering cliffs and wildlife. Then continue to the cool mountain town of San Cristóbal de las Casas for a relaxed evening.
